Why buy illustration? The reasons are immeasurable. You can put your unique stamp on all media that stands out from the borage of stock imagery flooding the market. There are no limitations for creativity since in the world of illustration, all things are possible.
We make the illustration buying experience an enjoyable, interactive process. Your input is not only valued but the catalyst for great ideas and visuals. We can work from a verbal description of your needs, a manuscript, descriptive text, a simple sketch or from a full blown comp. The idea is to make sure you have an image that conveys your message, captures the essence of the idea and finally, be eye-catching. Illustration garners more attention too. Your audience will notice it and appreciate the creative energy behind it. ![]() Once we discuss your visual problem, we set to work to solve it. A series of thumbnail sketches (upper left) will usually start to fine-tune the idea and get all parties thinking more specifically about the direction. The thumbnails are generally only viewed by the creative team. Sometimes showing thumbnails to your client or editor can speak too broadly to the concept and cause confusion. Once we've narrowed the direction one or more intermediate sketches (upper right) can usually make for a better presentation to other decision makers. If everyone agrees to a sketch then it's on to a tight pencil. The tight pencil sketch (left) requires more time, so it's best to have everyone involved weigh in before moving forward. We do extensive research to create imagery that can include environments, models and photography. Once completed, the tight pencil is an exact framework for the finished product. It is suitable for placement if you're including titles or text. Any final adjustments can and should be made in this stage. Tight pencils are generally accurate enough to critically review the finer details with scrutiny.![]() If you're needing to make a more comprehensive sales pitch, for a modest fee, we can provide a scaled down color study (right) that can ease concerns about the final illustration. They also work well to comp up materials for presentations. On to the final illustration. Once we've gotten to this stage, the only surprises should be pleasant ones. All the artwork is done conventionally, meaning it's paint on illustration board which would then be scanned, or for larger pieces, photographed. All the final art is painted on a pealable surface for drum scanning. In some cases we can scan work in-house but we generally recommend professional scans. We will send you a rough scan for reviewing the art before it ships to you. Being that the work is done traditionally, there is an original painting that can be purchased separately from printing rights by you or your client. Many have been purchased as gifts, for business or private collections and for fund raisers. ![]() We hope you'll consider illustration for your next project. It's an art form steeped in tradition, yet ever-changing to fit into current trends and styles. Illustration takes you to other worlds or just makes the current one more opulent, mysterious or wonderful. |
